ABOUT US

INSPIRING CONFIDENCE

A professional yacht brokerage that strives in a team oriented environment with your interest in mind. That is who we are.

Not only do we represent leading new boat brands, we are knowledgeable in all facets of helping you navigate through the aspects of brokerage sales. Whatever it is that makes your heart sing, we are here to help.

When we first opened our doors on Granville Island in 1994, the only thing we started with was an empty office with 2 old desks and our passion for sailing. We were determined to turn our love of sailing into a viable business. Some 20 years later, our integrity and commitment has carried us through

Had I only known! I took up sailing in my early twenties by moving onto a CS27 with my future wife. I’m 6’2″ and the headroom was 5’11”. After two years of living aboard with a sore neck, we got married and moved into an apartment (500 sq. ft. of heaven with standing headroom, a hot shower and refrigeration). They say you should do what you love, and so I did, and here I am today.

After 20 years of being in the yachting industry, I still find joy in seeing the smiling faces of my customers. It’s really why I’m still here. That, and I love boats.

In beautiful British Columbia, we have the opportunity to view and experience some of the best landscapes in the world. Cast off from the dock and set sail for any destination, entering a world of simple pleasures, the sun, the wind and a grin on your face.

Being on or near the water has been a constant in my life, even when landlocked for many years in Alberta. I grew up in a boating family, helping my dad maintain and restore boats playing deck hand and fishing guide in Northern BC waters. These days, my family and I spend as much time as we can on or around the water, particularly making forays across the Georgia Straight to Valdes Island where we are restoring an “off the grid” cabin.

Much of my professional career had been in Health Care Marketing and Business Development, and my transition to yacht sales and management has allowed me to marry my avocation with my vocation. I truly love being able to help clients with every stage of their boating experience and in finding the right boat to meet their needs. When the time comes to move on from your current boat, I will ensure that your boat is presented in the most effective and appropriate manner in our current cluttered market.

I look forward to working with you on your boating dream!

I am proud to work here. At Yacht Sales West, we get to represent and service the yachts I would choose to own and sail myself. We are a small firm that personally cares about its clients’ and employees’ needs, and it shows in the company’s culture. Since joining the team in 2008, I have made a lot of friends in the local boating community and helped over 100 yachts find a new home along the way.

Purchasing or selling a yacht can be a daunting process to most people. Let’s work together and make the experience a smooth and enjoyable one. I have learned through many, many successful deals (and few challenging ones) how to “navigate” these waters. Allow me to be your guide to the local or international yacht market so you can avoid pitfalls and achieve the goals you want.

My family has been calling Victoria and Vancouver Island home for six generations. Since arriving by steam ship, we have been involved with the local waters in one facet or another. If this region is new to you, let me show you why it’s an area to be enjoyed, respected and cared for.

Boating has been a part of my life for a very long time. I crossed the Atlantic in 1967 and have been hooked ever since. My first “real” boat experience started in an 8′ row boat. In 1979 I was living aboard my own boat and working in the local boat building industry on everything from Reliance 37’s, Cooper 416’s and Maple Leaf 56’s to a 65’ Huntingford design.

I started racing in 1981 and haven’t stopped since. Over the years, I’ve won many manjor races in BC. In 1988 I took my passion of boating and my skills of building and refitting and began my career in yacht sales. Over the past years, I’ve been a fleet captain, VARC rep and a BCYBA Director. Having owned 14 boats personally, I am very familiar with the process of buying and selling.

If you are looking for someone to either help you find the right boat or sell your current boat I offer a lot of knowledge and a positive attitude you can depend on now and in the future. I still have clients from 1988 when I first got into this business. My job is to take the stress from you so you can make your decisions based on knowledge.

My introduction to sailing was nothing short of fantastic. I started sailing at the age of 8 in South Africa, when my school principal included sailing as an official school sport. Right through school and college, sailing and rugby was my life. Our Christmas family holidays always involved travelling around the country as I raced in various Provincial and National regattas, collecting hardware along the way. If I was not on my laser, I was offshore racing in 30ft swells along the African coastline generally on foredeck duty.

Moving toVancouver in 1994 only fueled my love for sailing as it was the first time I actually went cruising. I loved it. I’ve enjoyed the last twenty years teaching, racing and cruising in the beautiful waters ofBritish Columbia with my wife and three kids.

After moving to Vancouver, I became a certified ISPA sailing instructor. I found myself helping past and present students, friends and even strangers choose the boat of their dreams. It became pretty obvious that this was my calling and in 2011 I sold my retail business and became a yacht broker as a profession.

I take great pride in ensuring a seamless experience for my clients throughout the purchasing or selling cycle. My objective is for you to enjoy boating and not to worry about the transaction: leave that to me.

The variety of my work, the people I work with and the new people I meet all make me feel proud to have called Yacht Sales West my home for the last 20+ years. I started working here as a 20 something and now…well….you do the math!

Getting hooked on sailing came to me at the age of six when I learned to sail on a Sunfish in the Great Lakes. I was lucky enough to spend my youth growing up on a little Gulf Island: my family built a beautiful waterfront home and bobbing out front on a buoy was my Star boat. I spent many, many happy summers on that boat. I’ve crossed the Atlantic ocean on a delivery of a 65′ catamaran, sailed from Victoria to San Francisco, sailed around the Cayman Islands, lots of racing and lots more cruising in between. When not boating, you can usually find me hiking our local trails, romping on my enduro motorcycle, camping or kayaking. BC offers outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities on and off the water!

Service Technician

I joined the team in 2008 as a junior technician. I had just arrived from France and was in the process of becoming a Canadian citizen. Over the years, I’ve grown my skill in all things related to the commissioning and servicing for our customers. Plumbing? Check. Electrical? Check. Rigging? Check. Boat handling? Check.

I try and take full advantage of free time by spending it in the back country hiking and climbing. In 2011, I said, “au revoir”, and hopped on my bike and peddled across Canada. This January, I returned from a one year hiatus to travel the world, so to speak. Of course my mode of transport was my bicycle.

Office Ambassador

Hello! I am the newest member to the Yacht Sales West team. I am a young dog that is still in training to be the best ambassador that I can be! I am uber friendly and love to say hello to all visitors. Maybe one day I’ll get to meet you too!

My owner said that I can not just hang out and look cute all day: I have to start working. I now have a project called DOCK DOGS. I am looking for pictures from all my fellow boating doggies (cats are okay too) to post to our Facebook page. Email me your picture and I’ll make you famous! Woof woof wag.
