In 1998, SAIL magazine came calling. They wanted to do an onboard test of the Bavaria 46 Exclusive that we had recently brought into North America. Not only were we a young brokerage company, we had just become the sole representative for Bavaria Yachts of Germany throughout US and Canada. They sent a reviewer up to check it out. Boy, were we nervous and excited. This was a pretty big deal for us and depending on what the reviewer thought of the boat, it could help or hinder our marketing efforts. Not only did they like the boat and the builder, they liked us too! Since then, we’ve imported over 200 Bavaria’s into North America. We have many owners who still write to us and tell us how much they continue to love their boat. This makes us feel really proud.
“Dear Mr. Baronit,
In September, 2015 I flew from Maryland, U.S.A. to Victoria, B.C. to walk through, evaluate and complete a sea trial test of a 36′ Corsair trimaran, called “Madness.” Upon my arrival I was met by the broker, Mr. Michael Carkeek, who was kind enough to pick me up, give me a short introduction to the area and deliver me to the hotel. The following morning I spent several hours evaluating the boat, which presented itself beautifully, The next day I joined Mr. Carkeek and the owner for an extremely enjoyable sea trial that led to an offer, purchase and arrangement for delivery.
This was when we first encountered difficulties. We believed the transport would be easy on the vessel’s trailer: what we didn’t know was that the shipper’s rig was not suitable. This led to weeks of excuses, inappropriate emails full of name calling and bullying on the shipper’s part, with Mr. Carkeek attempting to keep things calm and get the vessel delivered. Finally this was arranged with another shipper, however payment had already been made to the first shipper, and it seemed we’d never see our funds again. After many attempts by Mr. Carkeek, and then your own intervention we recouped most of our funds, and have our vessel here safe and sound.
I would like to thank you for your efforts, and mention that Mr. Carkeek earned my respect and gratitude for what was (mostly!) a wonderful experience. He did not abandon us after the sale, and went the extra mile to make things happen. His efforts made this an enjoyable purchase instead of a nightmare. We will be eternally grateful, and I will continue to speak highly of him and Yacht Sales West on the sailing and multihull forums to which I belong.”
“Hi Debbie, Len, Simon and all Yacht Sales West Staff. Thanks for all the great work that you did with the Bavaria 9.7 ordering, delivery and commissioning. I am extremely happy with the way the boat is put together and with the way she sails. Simon, Sven and I had a perfect sail around Comox Bay and Baynes Sound yesterday, and I’m sure that Sven now has some excellent photos to accompany his upcoming PY article. Also would like you to know that I received the 9.7 boat licence, thanks, Debbie. “Sublime” is very comfy and a huge amount of fun to sail.”

“Hi Richard – Just got off the phone with Jane and she told me how great you were to talk to! But of course you knew that. You must know that we have great confidence in you both professionally and personally. Our experiences with you have been wonderful through distressing health issues to boot!
The only reason that we needed to talk today was because of that email from the broker in Seattle which was both confusing and disturbing! We felt comfortable enough with you to share it with you and get your reaction. I would always feel that you would be protecting our financial interest.”
Last summer I circumnavigated Vancouver Island on Battuta, our 2009 Bavaria 31 Cruiser, and was solo from Vancouver counterclockwise and all the way down to Ucluelet before my family joined me. It was quite the epic journey, with every kind of weather and sea-state imaginable, particularly over the first couple of weeks when a series of low pressure systems made for SE gales up and down the coast. The boat was fantastic, and with all that fog out there I was very happy to have radar (and AIS, which I wired in while I was holed up in Kyuquot waiting on weather). And with all those rocks out there I was very happy not to hit one! Thanks to Len, Simon, and Debbie for selling us such an awesome boat, and for all the great after-sale service and support you’ve given me over the years. Bavaria and YSW are awesome!
“Service with a smile from people who know sailboats who welcome you into their sailing family. How good is that?”
Although my wife and I were originally in the market for a used boat, we felt that there would be less maintenance headaches and more enjoyment with a new boat. We fell for the modern design of the 335 from Dufour. After a test sail, we were hooked. From our first consultation with Simon Cox in Sidney to the arrival of our new boat, we felt informed and included in the process every step of the way. He even helped my family and I bring the boat home to Victoria the first time. Yacht Sales West has been very supportive since we took delivery of our boat: any questions or service items have been dealt with swiftly. It’s been happy sailing and we love our boat! Thanks, Yacht Sales West!

Can I start by saying we have sailed since the 80’s so have been through this process several times. We have just bought a CS 33 through Yacht Sales West in Sidney. Mike and Simon made it easy for us. It was good to see them acting for the owner but also helping us. It’s an old boat but well built. We had a great test sail. It was windy. I can’t imagine having to keep jumping on different boats and getting the best out of them regardless. Mike did that. He didn’t want to give us a ten minute sail but kept us going until we were happy. Simon joined in for the survey, taking a video of what was wrong. They negotiated a deal and organized the repairs before we took possession. All I can say is that it was a good non pressured experience for us. We have the boat that suits us best at this time. If we were buying again, we would go back to Simon or Mike. That is the best recommendation I could give. So thanks guys.
