A Garcia Exploration 45 Adventure - Part 4: From Arctic Ice to New Horizons

Rhode Island to Annapolis

After months of icebergs, fog, Arctic anchorages and some of the most remote waters on Earth, Aventura IV had certainly earned a little attention.

Following an extraordinary maiden voyage of more than 8,000 nautical miles, she was left in the capable hands of New England Boatworks in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, for a thorough service before her next destination, the Annapolis Boat Show.

It was quite a change of pace.

Not long before, Aventura IV had been navigating Arctic ice.

Now she needed to get ready for boat-show crowds.

But first, there were still 400 nautical miles of ocean between Rhode Island and Annapolis.

One More Passage

The original plan was to take the shorter inshore route past New York City, following once again in the wake of the first Aventura, which had sailed the same route 37 years earlier.

Strong westerly winds changed those plans, and once again, the weather had the final say.

Instead, Aventura IV headed offshore. The 400-mile route proved far from leisurely, with persistent southwesterly winds accompanying the yacht south.

Apparently, after everything the Arctic had thrown her way, Aventura IV wasn't quite ready for an uneventful passage.

An Unexpected Passenger

About 60 miles offshore from New York, the crew received a surprise visitor.

An exhausted bird, apparently blown out to sea by the strong winds, landed in the cockpit and spent the night resting quietly in a sheltered corner.

By morning, seemingly refreshed from its unexpected overnight passage, the little visitor took off again and headed toward land.

It was later identified as a yellow-shafted flicker.

After polar bears, humpback whales, seals and Arctic ice, it seemed somehow fitting that Aventura IV should add one small feathered passenger to her growing collection of encounters.

Annapolis Ahead

Forty-eight hours after leaving Rhode Island, Aventura IV reached Delaware Bay, where a favourable current helped carry her toward the Chesapeake-Delaware Canal and into Chesapeake Bay.

There was little time to linger.

The Annapolis Boat Show was about to begin, and after more than 8,000 nautical miles of ocean sailing, Arctic exploration and one final offshore passage, Aventura IV needed to make the transition from hardworking expedition yacht to boat-show star.

Quite the change of scenery.

From the ice of the Canadian Arctic to the docks of Annapolis, Aventura IV's first season had already taken her farther than most yachts will travel in a lifetime.

For the moment, though, the sails could come down.

There were visitors to welcome, stories to tell and, perhaps, finally a chance to catch her breath.

But only for a little while.

There were still plenty of horizons ahead.

Coming Next: A New Chapter

The Arctic had tested Aventura IV. The Atlantic had proven her.

Now, with thousands of miles behind her, the question wasn't whether she was capable of another great adventure.

It was where she would go next.

Part 5: The Call of the North

Some journeys aren't finished the first time.

Aventura IV had already crossed oceans, explored the High Arctic and discovered firsthand just how quickly ice and weather could change even the best-laid plans.

But some adventures have a way of calling you back.

The Northwest Passage had remained unfinished, and for Aventura IV, that remarkable stretch of Arctic water still held a powerful pull.

Sometimes, turning back isn't the end of the story. It's simply the beginning of another attempt.
