Getting Your Yacht Ready for Summer

Whether you own a roomy sailing yacht or a large powerboat, a little preparation before the season begins can help prevent costly repairs, improve safety, and make every trip more enjoyable. Here's a simple checklist to get your yacht ready for a stress-free summer on the water.

1. Engine Room & Mechanical Systems

Large yachts have more systems to maintain, so start below deck.

Batteries & Electrical

  • Check all battery banks and chargers.
  • Clean terminals and inspect connections for corrosion.
  • Test shore power systems, inverters, and generators.

Engines & Fluids

  • Change engine oil and filters if not completed before winter layup.
  • Check coolant levels, transmission fluids, and fuel filters.
  • Inspect belts, hoses, clamps, and engine mounts for wear.

Cooling Systems

  • Examine raw-water impellers and replace if needed.
  • Check sea strainers and clean out debris.
  • Ensure all cooling systems are functioning properly before departure.

Fuel Systems

  • Inspect fuel lines and connections.
  • Replace fuel-water separators.
  • Top up tanks with fresh fuel and use a quality marine fuel treatment to eliminate moisture buildup.

2. Safety First

Nothing is more important than ensuring your yacht is safe and compliant.

Safety Equipment

  • Inspect life jackets, harnesses, and safety tethers.
  • Ensure fire extinguishers are charged and up to date.
  • Verify flares and emergency signaling equipment have not expired.
  • Check first aid kits and replenish supplies.

Communication & Navigation

  • Test VHF radios and handheld backups.
  • Update chartplotters, GPS systems, and navigation software.
  • Check radar, AIS, depth sounders, and autopilot functionality.
  • Confirm navigation and anchor lights are working.

Bilge & Emergency Systems

  • Test bilge pumps and high-water alarms.
  • Inspect seacocks and through-hulls.
  • Confirm emergency shutoffs operate properly.

3. Hull, Deck & Exterior Care

Winter weather can take a toll on your yacht's exterior.

Hull Cleaning

  • Thoroughly wash the hull and topsides.
  • Inspect for scratches, blisters, or damage.
  • Apply a fresh coat of wax to protect against UV rays and saltwater.

Running Gear

  • Inspect props, shafts, rudders, and trim tabs.
  • Check zinc anodes and replace if worn.
  • Ensure bottom paint is still providing adequate protection.

Rigging (For Sailing Yachts)

  • Inspect standing and running rigging.
  • Check sail condition, stitching, and hardware.
  • Lubricate winches and deck fittings.

Canvas & Upholstery

  • Clean and inspect biminis, dodgers, covers, and enclosures.
  • Treat vinyl seating with marine-grade protectant.
  • Repair any tears before they become larger problems.

4. Interior Comfort Systems

Make sure life onboard is comfortable from day one.

Fresh Water Systems

  • Flush freshwater tanks and lines.
  • Sanitize drinking water systems.
  • Check water pumps and water heaters.

Air Conditioning & Heating

  • Service air conditioning units and clean filters.
  • Check seawater cooling pumps and hoses.
  • Test cabin climate control systems before summer cruises.

Galley & Appliances

  • Check refrigerators and freezers.
  • Inspect propane or electric cooking systems.
  • Verify all appliances are operating efficiently.

5. Final Dockside Checks

Before your first cruise:

✅ Review insurance and registration documents
✅ Update cruising guides and charts
✅ Inspect dock lines and fenders
✅ Test onboard electronics one final time
✅ Schedule any outstanding maintenance items
