1988 Hallberg-Rassy 42E
If you are looking for a robust and comfortable vessel for extended or offshore adventures one cannot go wrong with a Hallberg Rassy. In particular, the HR42E is well suited for offshore adventures with her cutter ketch rig, modified fin keel, encapsulated lead keel, and skeg hung rudder.
The owner, a professional engineer and USCG Master, has continually updated “Raison D’Etre” over his 12 years of ownership based on his experience in sailing the boat from the Mediterranean to BC. From 2018 there has been another round of extensive updating including a new engine! A rare HR42E with a bow thruster to reduce docking anxiety.
The owner is available to provide an extensive handover to make sure the boat continues to receive the same high level of care.
The previous owners only used the boat for a few months of the year with boat safely stored ashore for the remaining time. Estimated that over the boat’s life it has been out of the water 40% of the time.
2023 Survey available for review.

Robust design and construction with long fin keel and skeg hung rudder. Lead encapsulated keel – no keel bolts to worry about ! Hull is solid GPR and deck and superstructure with foam core. Teak decking replaced 2005, re-sealed 2025.
INTERIOR
Beautiful handcrafted interior to a level of quality rarely seen today. In typical Hallberg Rassy fashion, the yacht is an optimum compromise of comfort and practicality for extended offshore adventures. As one enters the saloon through the companionway the galley is right at hand to starboard and the navigation station to port. Moving forward there is a large foldup saloon table with integrated storage. The two saloon benches have fold up berths providing four excellent sea berths. Continuing forward is yet more storage and the guest head. The guest head has a new sink and a separate shower area. All the way forward is the guest cabin again with extensive storage. This berth can be configured as a large bed for a couple or into two singles. The large forward facing navigation station is a great chart table or “home” office with room for large charts and extensive storage. All the way aft is the very private and comfortable master suite with ensuite head. This berth too can be either two singles or one large bed. Diesel heat – Wallas 40D (2020) for four season cruising. Deck prisms for additional lighting Interior teak woodwork, soles and upholstery in assessed by a surveyor in ‘good’ condition. Forward and aft head sinks replaced 2025.

COMMENTS
The present owner is the third owner; he is a registered professional mechanical engineer. Raison d’Etre was purchased in 2012, in Kos, Greece, sailed to North America. The boat was launched in 1988, the first owners were two German engineers who sailed her from Sweden to the Mediterranean; after 1990 she was on the hard for 8 month/year. The boat was sold in 2001 to a Belgium couple and stayed years out of Antalya, Turkey and Kos, sailing throughout the Aegean Sea. During this period, she was on the hard for 6 months every year. Since purchased by the present owner she has been in the water except for two years on the hard in Spain. Throughout her 37 years of life, she has been out of the water 40% of the time (i.e., in the water 22 years).
